Amilcar at 1923 Essex MCC Meeting at Brooklands
Reference number: Autocar Glass Plate A1773, This photo is from the LAT Photographic archive, which is part of Haymarket who I work for. Please see the "Ordering Prints" page if you would like prints stating the reference above but please mention me, (Austin Harris). |
This is Vernon Balls in his skiff bodied 970cc C type Amilcar on the occasion of his first win at Brooklands when as "S Vernon" he entered the Essex MC Junior Short Handicap which he won on 2nd June 1923
Presumably the "KN" on the side is a repeat of the "hot as pepper" joke
which Vauxhall had used on their streamlined single-seater in 1909? No disrespect
to Mr B, but he doesn't exactly give the impression of being a gentleman who
would put up with such levity!
A member of the Balls family have stated the letters KN were in fact Vernon Balls wife's initials.
Was she known as "Spicy" to friends???
